Drone Pilot Ground School
Osprey Drone Training UK
Commercial Drone Training, PFCO Course & Flight Test all in one Unique Location!
Osprey Drone Training based in Portland, Dorset are a CAA approved National Qualified Entity (NQE) drone pilot ground school. We provide drone training for any pilot wishing to gain their Permission for Commercial Operations or PFCO. This will allow successful candidates to operate commercially within the UK and Europe (to earn money flying drones).
Training from the former Royal Navy Air station or HMS Osprey in Portland (Dorset) gives our students a truly unique perspective on this industry. Our students will be able to see, touch and maybe even get inside one of the few remaining Sea King helicopters in the UK.
Seeing these wonderful aircraft up close and personal should ram home the importance of training to be a better, more professional and responsible drone pilot. Taking your drone flight test from a real-life, working runway (below) will add to the thrill of your next step to obtaining your PFCO.
The Drone Pilot Ground School Training Course
Osprey Drone Training offer a 3-day course on weekdays (Wed-Fri) and a weekend course (Fri-Sun). The drone pilot course I took back in 2015 was spread over three days but not at the same time. This meant I had to wait a few weeks before taking my flight test and subsequently applying for my PFCO. We have decided to do everything you need to qualify in one block period. This offers you a faster route to your PFCO and therefore your earning potential.
Each course consists of:
Day 1 - 08:00 to 17:30
- 1Air Law
- 2UAS Operating Principles
- 3Airmanship & Aviation Safety
- 4Human Factors & Recap
Day 2 - 08:00 to 18:30
- 2Navigational Charts
- 3Aircraft Knowledge
- 4Operational Procedures
- 5Theory Test
Day 3 - 08:00 to 17:00
- 1Operations Manual Workshop
- 2Flight Planning Session
- 3Practical Flight Test
Osprey Drone Training Location
We have teamed up with Heliops in Dorset to allow us to train from this fabulous location near Portland/Weymouth. There is plenty of space on the runway and landing pad for flight tests and the interior facilities are superb. We have a classroom overlooking the hangar which houses the Sea King Helicopters. There is a fully functional kitchen, an operations room and lounge area for breaks. You can get an idea of these facilities in the video below which I personally did (with 12 hours notice) for Heliops. Please note: This was at a time when the Coastguard still operated from this location.
Our CAA approved 3 day PFCO course includes all ground school training, exam, operations manual workshop and practical flight skills test and costs £599 for the three days. This includes lunch and refreshments but not accommodation.
We have an extensive list of preferred guesthouses and B & B's that we know personally in Weymouth. Ideally, we would like all course attendees to be in one location for you to liase and study together each evening. Once a course is full, we will arrange suitable, nearby accommodation. The price will be around £35 per night per person.
